The Unsyncable II – Seven Rasas

Sparked by his stay at bangaloREsidency in 2016, Wolfgang Spahn explores in this noise and projection performance the Rasas of traditional Indian Aesthetics. Despite many changes during centuries, Rasas formed a crucial part of classic Indian performance arts. Their focus lies on guiding the audience into a parallel aesthetic universe, where spectators may experience elemental human emotions such as love, comedy, fury, compassion, fear, heroism or mystery.

The Performance starts with rhythms based on Fibonacci sequence and then opens up to delve into seven Rasas that captivate the audience. Fibonacci sequence actually has been first described in Indian mathematics (ca. 200BC) and also influenced Sanskrit poetics. Thus the installation pays tribute to Indian Aesthetics and their artists.

“The Unsyncable II – Seven Rasas” uses an open source Paper Synthesizer to sculpt electric circuits into sonic waveforms. Paper Synthesizer is a modular analogue synthesizer, which is based on Spahn’s sustainable Paper PCBs. Paper PCBs are an option to create sustainable boards that use renewable resources and also outwit industrial standards. Due to their modular nature Paper Synthesizer elements can be re-arranged, re-used and most notably extended to create more complex structures without limitation.

All audio and visual synthesizer, effects and devices are designed and build by the artist.
